About Whyland

Whyland is a 3D learning game for children aged 4 to 12, run by the company named in Contact. These terms are between that company and the grown-up who uses Whyland or lets a child use it.

Who can use Whyland

  • Children may play with the permission of a parent or guardian, who is responsible for how they use Whyland.
  • Family accounts and memberships are for adults aged 18 or over. Memberships are offered only on pages for grown-ups; children never see prices or a way to pay in the game.
  • Keep sign-in codes and explorer codes private. You are responsible for what happens in your family account.

The free starter and memberships

  • Free starter: free, with no card. It includes the guided first session, the homestead, Friendship Meadow with its labs and the Calm Corner, and the first chapter of your child's first land.
  • Membership: the Whyland membership adds every land and every chapter, with the reading path first. It covers up to 3 children in one family. You can pay yearly or monthly. Memberships that started before October 25, 2026 (Reading or Complete) keep working and open the same lands.
  • The price, what the membership includes and how often you pay are shown to you before you pay, and in your account.
  • Free trial: a new membership, yearly or monthly, starts with a free trial of 7 days, once per family. A free trial needs a parent's consent for their children's information given by email first (the step where you confirm your email with a code); a family without it, or one that had a membership before, starts with the first payment, and we show you which before you start. You give a card to start the trial. We show you how long it lasts, the price you will pay after it and the date of the first payment before you start, and we email you a reminder at least 2 days before it ends. Cancel before the trial ends and you pay nothing. If you do not cancel, the first payment is taken when the trial ends, and the membership renews automatically as described below.

Automatic renewal and canceling

  • A membership renews automatically at the end of each month or year, at the price you agreed to, and is charged to the payment method you gave, until you cancel.
  • You can cancel online at any time in your account, under Membership. Canceling stops the next renewal, and your membership runs to the end of the time you already paid for. There is no cancellation fee.
  • You can switch between yearly and monthly in your account; the difference in price is worked out for the time that is left.
  • For a yearly membership, we email you before each renewal with the price and how to cancel.
  • If we ever change the price, we email you before the new price applies to you, and you can cancel before then.
  • Before you pay or start a free trial, we show the price, how often you will be charged, when the first payment is taken, that the membership renews automatically, and how to cancel, and we keep a record of your agreement.

Refunds

  • 30-day guarantee, yearly or monthly: if you ask within 30 days of your first payment (after a free trial, the first payment taken when the trial ends), we refund it in full and end the membership.
  • After that, cancel any time; we do not refund part of a month or a year.
  • Otherwise payments are not refundable, except where the law gives you a right to a refund. To ask for a refund, email us.

If a membership ends

Nothing your child earned is taken away. Their explorer, homestead, companions and every land they already reached stay. A chapter that is under way can be finished. New chapters in member lands wait until the membership starts again, and then everything carries on where it stopped. Your child never sees a message about money.

Playing fairly and safely

  • Use Whyland for personal play and learning, not for business.
  • Do not try to break, overload, copy or misuse Whyland or its voices, get around its limits or codes, or reach information that is not yours.
  • Online play has only preset waves and phrases. Do not try to use Whyland to share personal information with other players.
  • We may pause or close access that breaks these terms or puts children at risk. If we end a membership for any other reason, we refund the unused part.

Our content

Whyland's games, characters, stories, voices, pictures and code belong to us or to those who license them to us. You may use them only to play Whyland, except where an open license listed on the credits page gives you more rights. Parts of our curriculum map are adapted from openly licensed data.

Learning, feelings and AI voices

  • Whyland is a learning game. It supports school, teachers and professional advice, and does not replace them.
  • We weave in practice for big feelings. Whyland is a game, not therapy. If you are worried about your child, talk to their doctor or school.
  • Character voices are made with AI.

Reading out loud

Reading out loud checks a child's reading with a speech recognition model that we use under the BigCode OpenRAIL-M license. That license allows the model to be used only within limits, and these terms carry the same limits. You may not use reading out loud, or try to reach the model through it:

  • to break any law;
  • to exploit or harm children in any way;
  • to make or spread malware;
  • to make or spread false information meant to harm others;
  • to make or spread personal information that could harm someone;
  • to present machine-made output in public without saying it is machine-made;
  • to defame, disparage or harass anyone;
  • to pretend to be someone else in order to deceive;
  • for fully automated decisions that harm someone's legal rights or create binding obligations;
  • to discriminate against people or groups based on their social behavior, personal traits or legally protected characteristics;
  • to exploit the weaknesses of a group, including those of a certain age, in ways that cause harm;
  • for medical advice or to read medical results;
  • for automated decisions in justice, law enforcement, immigration or asylum.

The reading check is practice inside a game. It is not a test or an assessment of a child.

Changes and availability

We keep improving Whyland, so features may change. We try to keep it available, but we cannot promise it will always be available or free of errors. If we change these terms in a way that matters, we tell family account holders by email before the change applies. If you do not agree, you can cancel and stop using Whyland.

Our responsibility to you

We build Whyland with care and provide it as it is, with no promises beyond those in these terms. As far as the law allows, we are not responsible for losses we could not have foreseen, and our total responsibility to you is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before your claim. Nothing in these terms takes away rights the law gives you that cannot be taken away.

Privacy

How we handle information is explained in the privacy notice and the children's privacy notice.
